Does a trade business still need a website?

Google profile, Facebook page, word of mouth: do you still need a website? Yes, but not the kind most trades think. What a trade website actually needs to do, what it does not, and how to have one without paying a web designer.

A person browsing website designs on a laptop

Most trade owners have heard the pitch: a web designer, $3,000 to $8,000, a beautiful site with a slideshow. Six months later it is out of date, the contact form goes to an inbox nobody reads, and nobody can remember the login.

So it is fair to ask: with a Google profile and word of mouth, do you even need a website?

Yes. But not that kind.

The short version

  • Clients check you out before they call. A website is where they confirm you are real, local and do the work they need.
  • AI tools like ChatGPT now recommend local businesses, and they read websites.
  • A trade website needs to do four things: say what you do and where, show proof, take a request or a booking, and let clients pay.
  • It does not need to be expensive, or something you update by hand.

Why a website still matters

People check before they call. Even with a referral, most people look you up first. A website that shows your services, your area and real reviews turns that check into a call.

Search is changing. BrightLocal's 2026 consumer survey found that 45% of consumers now use ChatGPT or other AI tools for local business recommendations, up from 6% a year before. Those tools read websites. A clear one helps you show up.

Your Google profile is not yours. It is great and you should keep it up to date. But you do not control its layout, its rules or what it shows next to you.

It works when you do not. At 10 p.m., a website can take a request, book a time and take a payment. You cannot.

What a trade website actually needs

Forget the slideshow. A trade website needs to do four jobs well:

1. Say what you do, and where. Your services, your service area, your hours, and what you charge to come out if you charge a call-out fee. Plain words, on the first screen.

2. Show proof. Your reviews, photos of real jobs, how long you have been in business, licences and insurance where they matter.

3. Take a request or a booking. A short request form at minimum. Better: online booking, where clients pick a service and a real free time.

4. Let clients pay and manage their work. A client portal where they see appointments, accept quotes and pay invoices, without calling the office.

What it does not need

  • A custom design that costs thousands
  • A blog you never update (unless you will)
  • A contact form that emails a box nobody checks
  • Stock photos of smiling people in hard hats, if you have photos of your own work

Keep it up to date without trying

The biggest problem with trade websites is not design. It is that they go stale: old prices, old hours, services you stopped offering, a phone number that changed.

The fix is a website connected to the system you already run the business in, so your services, prices, hours and reviews update themselves.

Quick answers

Is a Facebook page enough? It helps, but many clients do not use Facebook, and you do not control what it shows. Use it alongside a website, not instead of one.

Do I need to pay for SEO? Start with the basics: clear services, your area in plain words, fresh reviews and a fast site. That beats most paid SEO for a local trade.

How long does it take to set up? With a hosted builder connected to your business, an afternoon.
